Copernicus, previously known as GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security), is the European Programme for the establishment of a European capacity for Earth Observation.

In response to Agenda 21, the World Health Oganization (WHO), in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Meteorological Organization, the International Agency on Cancer Research and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, established INTERSUN, the Global UV Project: The UV Index forecasts are presented applying the practical guide "Global Solar UV Index", a joint recommendation in the framework of INTERSUN.
